A Mother's Love

Was there ever a time you were rude to your mom and didn't apologise after that? Or maybe that one time when you disobeyed and talked back to her until you made her cry? Perhaps you'd remember the time you thought such bad things about her, then didn't bother asking God to forgive you for it.

When was the last time you thanked your mom - not for getting you a present or for fetching you to tuition class, but just for being there for you? When was the last time you told her that she was the best mom in the whole wide world, and that you loved her very very much?

It's been weighing on my mind these past couple of days, how mothers are so important to us. Where would we be and what would we be like without them? Moms are the ones who have looked after us since young. They've taught us what is right and what is wrong, moulded us as people and helped us to grow, devloped our characters and our unlimited potential. They have been, and still are our support, sharing our joys and sorrows, successess and failures. Their smiles unwavering, they are always there, ready to laugh with us, offer us comfort, guide us in making all decisions big and small.

Back in primary school, a good friend sent me an e-mail entitled "Mum's love". I read it and read it and read it again, and I remember the tears which were just threatening to drop, right there and then. I quickly printed it out and kept it in my cupboard to always remind me about the sheer magnitude and greatness of a mother's love.

Recently, upon taking out some textbooks from my cupboard (seeing as to how the prelims are in less than a month, I figured it's about time), I chanced upon the hard copy of that very e-mail.

Mum's Love
When you were 1 year old, she fed you and bathed you.
You thanked her by crying all night long.
When you were 2 years old, she taught you to walk.
You thanked her by running away when she called.
When you were 3 years old, she made all your meals with love.
You thanked her by tossing your plate on the floor.
When you were 4 years old, she gave you some crayons.
You thanked her by colouring the dining room table.
When you were 5 years old, she dressed you for the holidays.
You thanked her by plopping into the nearest puddle.
When you were 6 years old, she walked you to school.
You thanked her by screaming, "I'M NOT GOING!"
When you were 7 years old, she bought you a baseball.
You thanked her by throwing it through the next-door-neighbour's window.
When you were 8 years old, she handed you an ice-cream.
You thanked her by dripping it all over your lap.
When you were 9 years old, she paid for piano lessons.
You thanked her by never even bothering to practise.
When you were 10 years old, she drove you around all day, from soccer to gymnastics, to one birthday party after another.
You thanked her by jumping out of the car and never looking back.
When you were 11 years old, she took you and your friends to the movies.
You thanked her by asking to sit in a different row.
When you were 12 years old, she warned you not to watch certain TV shows.
You thanked her by waiting until she left the house.
When you were 13, she suggested a haircut.
You thanked her by telling her she had no taste.
When you were 14, she paid for a month away at summer camp.
You thanked her by forgetting to write a single letter.
When you were 15, she came home from work, looking for a hug.
You thanked her by having your bedroom door locked.
When you were 16, she taught you how to drive her car.
You thanked her by taking it every chance you could.
When you were 17, she was expecting an important call.
You thanked her by being on the phone all night.
When you were 18, she cried at your high school graduation.
You thanked her by staying out partying until dawn.
When you were 19, she paid for your college tuition, drove you to campus and carried your bags.
You thanked her by saying goodbye outside the dorm so you wouldn't be embarrassed in front of your friends.
When you were 20, she asked whether you were seeing anyone.
You thanked her by saying, "It's none of your business."
When you were 21, she suggested certain careers for your future.
You thanked her by saying, "I don't want to be like you."
When you were 22, she hugged you at your college graduation.
You thanked her by asking whether she could pay for a trip to Europe.
When you were 23, she gave you furniture for your first apartment.
You thanked her by telling your friends it was ugly.
When you were 24, she met your fiance and asked about your plans for the future.
You thanked her by glaring and growling, "Mother, please!"
When you were 25, she helped to pay for your wedding, and she cried and told you how deeply she loved you.
You thanked her by moving halfway across the country.
When you were 30, she called with some advice on the baby.
You thanked her by telling her, "Things are different now."
When you were 40, she called to remind you of a relative's birthday.
You thanked her by saying you were "really busy right now".
When you were 50, she fell ill and needed you to take care of her.
You thanked her by reading about the burden parents become to their children.
And then one day, she quietly died. And everything you never did came crashing down like thunder on your heart.
Always remember to love thy mother, because you'll only have one mother in your lifetime.
**********
In life, we never know what's going to happen next. Why wait till tomorrow to do something when you can do it today, right now? Do tell your mom that she IS the best mom in the whole wide world, and that you love her very very much, because you'll only have one mother in your lifetime.

    WHAT'S WRONG WITH GREEN!?
Haha.I think Suyin would be an excellent mother with her extensive collection of Disney movies. And you can sing them to sleep too!
    Hahaha.
I'll make my kids support Manchester United and Portugal and Brasil. Or they won't be allowed to watch tv.

I think the main problem with Shan having children is that once one member of the family starts laughing, they will break into a chain of laughter where each laughs at how another laughs and they will never be able to stop.

no!! my children will be allowed freedom of choice ok!! but i will draw the line of anyone of them turns unusually bimbo-y or sissy. green is a good colour. it is rather unisex, so it can work for both boys and girls! yay! disney movies! and i'm not as bad as suyin because i still want to get married and have children. hrmph.

Seriously girl, you are so deep and scary. You must think a lot. About stuff. Where have you been all this while??? I like reading sensible blogs. Which could be why I never read my own. Hmm.

Yes I agree! Love mummy! But of course since my mother is rather non-expressively affectionate, so what I do is charge into her room and jump on her bed and do my over dramatic "oh I love you so" routine and then she scold me and ask me to get off her bed. Mothers are so fun to irritate. Bahaha.

I think shan will be an....... um, interesting mother. Of course perfect futher mother prize would go to LESLEY!!!
