One for the Penguins!

Have you read today's Life! section of the newspaper? It's BIG news!

The Australian animated flick Happy Feet, starring lovable pudgy cartoon penguins, scored US$42.3 million (S$65.9 million), while the new James Bond movie, Casino Royale, took home US$40.6 million in the first three days of their release in North America.

I'm so happy that Happy Feet has made it's mark on the world! Over James Bond too.

So often people rant and rave and sacrifice all just to watch those supposed Blockbuster hits or cheem Chinese arthouse films, but so many forget about what really makes the Cinema so enjoyable - cartoons! They're not just funny, wacky animated creatures embarking on an on-screen adventure - it's so much more than that. Cartoons are usually the ones that really teach us something; lessons, morals, values, letting us bask in the sheer entertainment of a good movie. It's rare to find a good movie these days, but cartoons usually top it.

In the older days there was Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid which taught little kids not just some of the world's most beautiful songs, but also lessons on love and kindness. Then came Pochahontas and Mulan which taught us about love (really, the over-arching theme in every excellent cartoon), sacrifice and honour. More recently we've had Brother Bear and Lilo & Stitch. I mean, who will forget? Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind. Or forgotten.

Cartoons are the most amazing thing to hit the big screen, and I'm tons thankful that young children have something they can really learn from. And even though I'm 15 going on 16, I'm still one of those cartoon-loving young children! Even when I'm 97, whether I'm hobbling around with a walking stick or whizzing around in a wheelchair, I'm going to pay 1203bucks (that's going to be the price of a ticket when I'm 97, considering how they've been strategically and steadily increasing the cost of one) to catch an animated film every week.

Gee, better start saving up before it's too late.
